here's something so special about graduation season. It's the culmination of years of hard work, late nights, countless assignments, and the excitement of stepping into an entirely new chapter. And what better place to celebrate that milestone than the campus where it all happened?
This spring, I had the pleasure of photographing Mayah's graduation portraits at California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State), and this session turned into one of my favorite reminders that sometimes the best photographs come from the moments you never planned.
One of the things I love about photographing graduation sessions at Sacramento State is just how versatile the campus is. Between its beautiful architecture, walkways, greenery, and iconic campus landmarks, there are so many opportunities to create a gallery that feels varied, personal, and completely unique to each graduate.
We initially had our sights set on the famous fountain in front of the library. It was one of the locations we were especially excited about incorporating into Mayah's session. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the fountain was turned off!
Sometimes a change of plans leads to something even better than what you originally envisioned. That's exactly what happened during Mayah's session.
We made our way into the library stairwell, and suddenly we had an entirely different creative direction. The architecture, staircases, natural light, and collegiate atmosphere created the perfect setting for something a little more editorial and unconventional.
We brought in a few personal touches that made the photographs even more fun: a Red Bull, old A+ papers, and all the little details that tell the story of a college experience.
The result was a collection of photographs that felt like a blend of editorial fashion imagery and a nostalgic look back at college life. Think iconic campus architecture, effortless poses, a little personality, and photographs that celebrate everything it took to get here.
These ended up being some of my absolute favorite images from the entire session.
One of my favorite things about senior and graduation sessions is finding ways to incorporate the details that make each person who they are. Your graduation portraits should be more than a collection of pretty pictures in a cap and gown. They should reflect your personality, your experiences, your background, and everything that has shaped you along the way.
For Mayah, displaying the Mexican flag was an important part of her session. It represents a meaningful part of her identity, her heritage, and the person she is beyond her academic accomplishments. Making space for that in her photographs was just as important as capturing the traditional graduation portraits.
I truly believe these are the details that make a session special. Whether it's incorporating your cultural heritage, a family tradition, your favorite hobbies, meaningful keepsakes, or even something as simple as your favorite coffee order, I want your photographs to feel like you.
My biggest advice to graduating seniors? Own it. Bring the things that make you who you are. Don't feel like your session needs to look like everyone else's. This is your milestone, your story, and your opportunity to celebrate everything that makes you uniquely you.
